Frequently Asked Questions

How much water do I add to ICE Tropic mix?

ICE Tropic slush mix is 5 parts water to 1 part mix. Granita should be mixed at a 4 to 1 ratio (except cappuccino which is a 3:1 ratio). Each Bottle yields up to 3 gallons of finished product and each case will make up to 315 8 oz. drinks.

Can I use my own mix?

The best answer is no. All frozen drink machines require a specific range of sugar content in the mix in order to freeze correctly. If too little sugar is in the mix you will end up with too much ice in the bowl, which can cause damage to the machine. Advanced users measure the sugar to water ratio in the mix (called brix) to make sure it's within the proper range.

Can I use carbonated drinks?

Not really. Since the bowls are open to the air any carbonated drinks will go flat. Sugar content is also required to make the machine freeze.

What does the timer do?

If your machine is on in the freeze mode for extended periods ice will build up on the outside of each bowl. The timer allows you to put the machine in defrost or chill mode so the ice can melt off. Commercial users schedule defrost cycles during low usage periods.

Do I have to change the freon?

No. Just like your refrigerator/freezer at home the freon does not need to be changed.

Do I have to add ice to my bowls?

No. All of the frozen drink machines we sell make their own ice. You can decrease freeze and mix recovery times if you add cold water to the mix.

What is a Granita machine?

Granita is another name for a frozen drink machine.

Do I need a water line connection?

Some models have autofill attachments that keep each bowl full, but most machines sold require the user to remove the hopper cover and add water, mix (and alcohol if desired) manually to each bowl. A water line is not required.

Are the washable parts dishwasher safe?

No, it's best to use soap and water only. The heat of a dishwasher can distort plastic parts.

How long does it take to freeze the drinks?

Most manufacturers do not specify a freeze or recovery time. Many variables contribute to freeze time such as outside air, mix and water temperatures. Any machine will freeze more slowly if it is outside in the hot sun. There are many steps you can take to reduce freeze time, such as using cold instead of hot water. Some large volume users run a batch of mix and remove it from the bowl. They keep it refrigerated until needed and then add the (cold) mix to an empty bowl.
